This novel begins with Ronnie or Veronica and Ronnie for short complaining to her mother in the passanger seat of her mothers car, with her little brother Jonah in the backseat. They are heading for Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina where there father that they havent seen or barly heard of since there parents devorce, has moved to. They are forced to spend the summer with him and although Jonah is thrilled about the idea Ronnie is not quite as thrilled. She spends the car ride complaining about leaving her friends and the beloved “New York City” club seen for the summer. Ronnie is the type of girl who spends her time with the wrong crowd, mohawks, drugs, high school drop outs and people of those sterotypes. She wears to much black makeup, complains and neglects her mother and does her own thing. As well Jonah her little brother age eight, is autistic and a optomistic bright mind who is quite comical. Once they arrive at Wrightsville Beach they meet up with her father. They havent seen or barly talked since the devorce because there mom had an affair while Ronnies father was away on his plenty of trips. That doesn’t come up until the end of the novel when Ronnie confronts her father thinking he was the one who tore their family apart and the truth comes out.
Ronnie is not thrilled about being there and her first day there she seperates herself and walks the fair alone, she gets pushed over by Will and although he is polite and apologizes she doesn’t act kind. There is something about that that refeshed Will and he couldn’t find himself to stop thinking about her. Will could be sterotyped as the rich kid and the preppy kid who's life is already set out for him. His parents are famous because of there worldwide car auto shop bussiness that his father runs. The summer days are spent with Ronnies father trying to convince her to pick up there hobbie together, the piano. Her father attended a high end music study school, one of the best in the country. He taught Ronnie when she was very young and she herself is very talented and was told that she would also be accepted into the school for arts as well whenever she had wanted to. It is also spent taking care of the turtles that have nested in there back yard on the beach, Will meets Ronnie here yet again. He works for the Marine and at first Will is completely interested in Ronnie and Ronnie shows him no interest whatsoever. After awhile they start to meet up more and more and although Will has to put a lot of effort, Ronnie sees him a completly different way and they fall in love. They spend days together at the marine, fishing, at Wills house and just doing simple things that they only enjoy because there together doing them. They have a sarcastic relationship and are always kidding around. They open up to each other and tell there pasts, such as Ronnies parents devorce and Will's little brothers death in a car accident quite some time ago. During there summer romance they face, Ronnies dads cancer disease that everyone knew about except Ronnie and Jonah, the local church glass window that had been burnt down secretly by Wills good friends Scott, Ronnies stalker and Blaze getting hospitalized , accusing Ronnie of stealing and almost getting charged and last but not least the hatching of the turtles that there family spent all summer taking care of. A lot happends during there summer, Ronnie and Will fight and break up and get back together but overall they fall in love with each other. But as the summer ends there forced to separate and go there own ways, which is a move they knew they had to make but a lot harder to face when the summer actually comes to a hault.
