Julie Barenson, the main character grew up in the downtown area of the big city of San Francisco with her mother. She lived with only her mother, since her father walked out on her family as a little girl. Although, that doesn’t include her mothers many boyfriends that pass in and out of the house until she was about the age of sixteen. She eventually after awhile of just dealing with everything confronted her mother about how she was sexually molested by her mother’s current boyfriend. Julies mother didn’t believe her and kicked her out of there home immediately, forcing her onto the street. While she was working at a local diner, she meant Jim, a young man from Swansboro, North Carolina in town shortly for business and her life was about to change forever. Jim and Julie fell in love instantly and though they hadn’t known each other long he purposed that she follow him to North Carolina and he’d find her a home and a job. She took the offer realizing there wasn’t anything there for her in San Francisco, she wasn’t leaving anything behind. They got married shortly after she followed him back home, and she was soon part of the family. They spent many amazing years of marriage very much in love, but unfortunately Jim passes away due to unexpected cancer. He leaves behind a note for Julie, explaining that he will always be with her and want’s only happiness for her. He also leaves behind a new golden retriever puppy to help Julie cope with the loss. Jim names him singer because of Julies love for Christmas carols. She decides to stay in Swansboro in their home and continue to work at the Salon with Jims close family surrounding her.
As years pass Julie’s pal singer is always next to her protecting her. He resembles Julie’s best friend and she although he is an animal she talks to him and takes him everywhere. She spends time with Emma and Henry, Jims sister and brother in law and Mike Harris, Jims best friend. Four years after Jims death on her thirtieth birthday, she realizes that she should start to meet new people. Richard Franklin seems perfect, he’s wealthy, attentive and takes her out of dates that involved five star restaurants, picnics on the beach and hot air balloon rides. Although he may be too much for Julie because he’s doing way to much considering she’s only known him for a week. Richard stops by her house at three in the morning to leave her notes and buys her a diamond necklace that he expects her to wear all of the time on there first date. Mike Harris Julie’s as well as Jims close friend, works at a garage in town with Henry, a acquaintance of Richards stops in one day to get work done on his car. He happens to mention that he is in the same business as Richard, so Mike very curiously asks about Richard. The man automatically gets uncomfortable and say’s that Richard is bad news and him or anyone he knows should stay away from him. Meanwhile, Julie see’s that things with Richard weren’t quite right and notices his strange demands and qualities. Mike although he has been around for many years, being Jims best friend and hers as well starts to slowly come into the picture. Mike had always been in love with Julie and although Julie didn’t see it, everyone else did. He always saw her as special and unlike anyone else he’s ever meant, but too shy to ever bring anything up or do anything about it. Mike and Julie go on a few dates and everything seems to be going extremely good, except for a minor detail. Julie keeps getting random calls, with a man’s voice and also feels like Richard is following her everywhere. Secretly, Richard photographs Julie and does follow her around, stalking her and calling her home phone. Julie remind him of his ex wife, Jessica and although he see’s it as wrong he explains that it just feels to good to stop. The end of this book is very unexpected and will keep you surprised, does Richard go to far with his obsession?
