1. A main role in the novel is played by none other then singer, Julie Barenson’s golden retriever. Singer was given to her by Jim when he had passed as a reminder of him and that he will always be with her and by her side. I myself have a Golden Retriever that carries a large amount of the traits that singer portrays in the novel. Singer in the novel when Richard stops by early in the morning sits by the door barking and growling, protecting her and letting her know someone’s there. He also loves to sleep in bed with Julie and when she’ll let him he’ll crawl right up next to her and take up the entire bed. He’s silly, carefree, very friendly and also protective. My Dog Zoë reminded me instantly of Singer. She’s a very loving dog and very silly. But, when anyone comes to the door, she growls with her hair standing straight up until we assure her that it’s okay. She also loves to jump up on any bed in the house and make herself a little too comfortable. In other word’s this was a really good connection for me, because they are so much alike.

2. At one point in the novel Julie is walking Singer on the road through a path in a woods area, near by her home. As she walks she is freaked out by every noise she hears, she looks foreword and backward constantly thinking that someone is going to jump behind her, out in front of her or just overall that someone is watching her. I myself get that strange feeling quite often when I am alone at home, the last one up late at night or walking in an area that isn’t too in town (like Julie had been). I get the feeling like most people probably do at times, that someone is watching your every move and someone’s going to jump out and get you.

3. When Richard invited Julie back to North Carolina with him that day in the diner and she accepts and moves with him, in a way it reminds me of when my mother dated a man in Erie and our family moved there. Julie is moving to a town where she knows no body, she doesn’t have any friends, family or even the person she’s moving there with all that well. She is basically forced to start all over again. When my family and I moved to Cambridge Springs, PA only a few miles away from Erie, PA we were also forced to start new. We had to meet his family, like Julie and also make new friends at brand new school that we werent used to. The transition was difficult and I can easily relate to how Julie felt during those few chapters.

4. Julie from the time she was growing up lived in many different apartments with many different men coming in and out of her life, due to her mother. She didn’t have the best childhood or family backing her up. From the time I was very little I also moved around quite a bit, I’ve lived in twelve different homes since the age of eleven and never really grew up in one place. Also, my mother being divorced had a couple different partners that were around periodically. Julie and I have a similar childhood growing up.

5. Julie Berenson is a friendly girl who enjoys simple things in life. When she meets Richard she likes that he is so into her but dislikes that he try’s way to hard to impress her and thinks that all she cares about is money and material things. In a way she reminds me kind of like myself. Where she isn’t greedy or shallow and loves her life the way it is and doesn’t need someone there consistently watching her. She doesn’t like how over protective or even over sensitive he is. Also, she finds it a little creepy how he hasn’t known her for over a week and he’s already saying he loves her. Julie and I, from some of the descriptions in the book and her personality are a lot a like In many different aspects.
