Savannahs hometown is out in the country, she is from a small well connected town. Towards the end of the novel John comes to visit Savannah at her new home with her new husband that she had written to him about. This is years after they last saw each other or even longer since they last had spoken to each other and John decides that he needs to see her after his father passes. When he pulls up to her home it is described in the novel exactly like this photograph. A white farm house with character, tin roof, trees and a lot of land to themselves was as it was described. This was Savannahs new home where she would start her ranch for disabled kids and not be far from her parent’s home. It is decorated well because Savannah is neat and like’s everything to be in order as well as beautiful. This is the later part in the novel and the last time that Savannah and John will ever see one another, before he lets her get back to her new husband. This picture of her new life and home with her husband his a very important picture and a large part in the novel. It signifies that there relationship is over and that she had moved on while he was away at war.

Coins of any shape, size, metal and value played a large role in the novel as well. John’s father’s passion was coins; it was a family passion that everyone before him had carried on. John’s father had to raise John alone because of his wife leaving him soon as the baby had been born. John’s father hadn’t talked much; for the most part there everyday routine since he had been little was exactly the same. He wasn’t the father that would show emotion or give you a hug goodbye. Frankly, the only conversation they struck up was only ever about coins. John did have any interest in coins but his father’s passion for them only increased each rare coin that he’d purchase. He had coins from years ago, all prices and there whole collection al together would have made them millionaires. Even though they weren’t rich, maybe not even middle class, his father wouldn’t sell the coins because they were something much deeper than money value to him. When John’s dad finally passes away after being ill for months, he leaves all the coins in John’s hands to pass down from generation. These coins play a large role because they are the only object that let him and his father bond throughout there lives.

The novel “Dear John” is about a young innocent and caring girl and a teenage rebel army solider that fall in love while he is home on leave from the army. John is stationed in Germany and lives in Wilmington, North Carolina. He proud to be in the army and considers it to be what he needed in his life, in order to get it together. On one of his two week leaves him and Savannah a young college girl, in his home town to help rebuild a home for a well deserved family meets John near the beach when she accidently bumps her bag off the pier and John goes in to receive it for her. They get to know each other and spend the weeks together and quickly there in love and she wants more than anything to wait for him to get back from the army so that they can start there life together. When 9/11 hits in the novel he can either chose to renew his contract or stay at home and finally work things out with Savannah and there slowly vanishing relationship. He chooses to fight for his country and for his friends despite the painful things going on at home, he see’s it as his duty too renew his contract. This picture is significant to the novel because Army and the fact John is full time enlisted in the Army plays a huge role in the novel, it’s what causes Savannah and his relationship to dissolve slowly and him to be away when his fathers death occurred.

The Shrimp Shack is also a location in the book that is described exactly like this photo. I chose this picture to represent “Dear John” the novel because it’s where Savannah and John share there first date together and get to know everything about each other. The restaurant is well described in the novel and Nicholas doesn’t fail to leave out any detail about the structure or date in general. This date is a turning point in the book, its where Savannah and John see each other as more then friends and maybe realize that there relationship could be much more then that had ever thought. The shrimp shack, is also in Wilmington and shows a great deal about the person John is and how he grew up, especially in his teenage years. John describes that is somewhere everyone at least has to go to once, not that the service is friendly or the cleanest environment but more to do with the experience. It’s significant because it really is the turning point in the book where there relationship begins to bloom.

This is a picture of Wilmington, North Carolina’s pier. This is where the larger part of “Dear John” takes place and also John’s hometown. Savannah and John meet along the pier when she accidently drops her bag off the pier into the ocean and John kindly receives it for her. Savannah is in town renting a beach house with her friends in Wilmington to help rebuild an unfortunate family’s home. They meet and fall in love together on his leave from the Army (two weeks). This is the setting of the book and where the basis of the story takes place, along the beach where they spend a lot of there time together. They make many memories on this beach together and I thought this would be a very significant picture because it’s the exact location.
