The novel “Dear John” by Nicholas Sparks is a true sappy, romantic and slightly sad story about two people who meet and fall in love no matter where there lives take them, although with a sudden twist towards the end. The book starts out with the main character and narrator flashing back the last ten years of his life that were pretty much a blur resulting in him doing nothing with his life during the 1990‘s. He lives with only his father in the small town of Wilmington, North Carolina since his mother disappeared as soon as she had given birth to John. He grew up with a father in a beach town with tourists in and out all year long. His father although did the best he could for John struggled and didn’t talk much at all, the only thing John and his father ever could have a full conversation about was coins. Coins from all over the world, it was a family passion that his grandfather passed down and John was not into. Growing up you would probably consider him a rebel he got into the wrong group of friends, got a tattoo that resembled the Chinese symbol for profanity, dated plenty of girls that lasted no longer then one night and also dropped out of school. After bumming around with his buddies living off of his dad he decided there was nothing else to do with his life other than to join the army. So he joined and was stationed in Germany. It wasn’t until he was on a leave from the army that he realized there was always something missing in his life. Savannah, a down to earth, innocent college girl in town with her friends to build a home for a unfortunate family who’s home got destroyed from a recent hurricane. Savannah and her friends were resting on the pier near John after he was done surfing and he couldn’t stop staring her direction. When savannahs bag fell over the edge into the ocean, Johns first reaction was to go in after it. After he thanked him and invited him back to their beach home for dinner. Awkwardly John accepted and joined savannah. At the house Savannah and him got to know each other and he even was introduced to her best friend ever since they were little kids growing up together Tim. That night Savannah and John made a connection and they both knew that they had to see more of each other, so they made plans for the next day. The two weeks John was on leave from the army were spent with Savannah. He showed her places in town and after she meant his father and fell in love with him too in a different way. She told him about her dreams of owning a ranch for special/ autistic kids, teaching them how to ride horses and feel that accomplishment. She grew up around horses in a small town near the mountains and enjoyed riding more than anything. It didn’t take much longer then a few days and they had fallen in love. So deeply in love that Savannah was going to wait for John to get from Germany. She wrote him a letter for him to read on the plane that when he got back they were going to get married and if he broke his promises to her he would break her heart. They spent one more leave together and during this leave he visited her parents in Lenoir and experienced her lifestyle and then while he was in Germany 9/11 happened and John felt that it was his duty to renew and join the Army for troop. Although at the time John felt this was right for him it was not right for Savannah and his relationship. Everything starts to go bad for John his dad has a heart attack and is slowly dying unable to use the bathroom or do anything for himself and Savannah’s letters are almost rare. Then he receives a letter from Savannah stating everything he feared most in his life and suddenly nothing at all makes any sense to him. On his leave he visited his father, the shortly after his father had died and left his entire fortune of coins that would make John a millionaire, John had no place to go except to find Savannah back in her home town, the only person who ever made sense and the only person who was there for him. Once he arrives to her home and her dream ranch, reality is in check and he soon finds out something that will shock him.
