In the novel the main character and love interest has a huge passion for helping others with disabilities or less fortunate. In the beginning John and her originally meet because she’s in his home town with her college friends renting a beach house to spend there days helping a family build a new home due to there loss from a recent hurricane. She is a kind hearted person and always looks for the good in people always willing to help others. Her major in college is special education because of her passion; helping others and wanting them to experience true happiness. I can connect to her passion because I somewhat share it to. For the past three years and four counting this summer iv joined up for camp confidence a camp for a week held for disabled kids from age 7 to 21. Each person gets assigned a camper to take care of and make friends with for a week. I as well as Savannah enjoy the look on their face when they realize they have accomplished something new to them or even make a new friend. I share the same wanting to help others less fortunate attitude Savannah had in the novel “Dear John.”

2. “Dear John” is a novel about a love shared by an innocent, small town, caring girl and a college drop out, teenage rebel, army man. While John is away in the army, savannah has to stay home and worry. Especially after he renewed his contract and went back to Germany after 9/11 had happened to fight for his country. It’s somewhat of a pride for him and he knows it is his duty, although his family members and love are worried. My family and I are familiar with the Army and Navy forces. Both of my uncles are involved in a force. My uncle Greg is involved with the computer systems and works in an office but my uncle Gary is involved with the combat section of the Army and when 9/11 hit I remember how worried my entire family was for him. I can relate to how Johns father and Savannah felt during the times where John had to fight for his country in danger because I myself remember worrying for my own family during that time.

3. In the midst of the novel after John and Savannah have meant and gotten to know each other a little bit after there first night together. There next date together was a surfing date and it was Savannahs first time since she lived in the mountains on a ranch she never had experienced it before only a little boogie boarding was as far as her experience went. The first time I ever tried to surf was in Florida and it went a lot like the book described Savannahs first time on a surf board. We both waded into the water slowly because it was freezing and then had trouble balancing on the board and fell down a million and one times till we finally got one right. Balancing on a surf board is really difficult and I struggled with it just as bad as Savannah had in the novel.
